Dazbo's Advent of Code solutions, written in Python

We have a bunch of hot air balloons, and we’re told we need to pre-heat their fuel using our fuel heating machine. It needs to be calibrated in advance. To do this, we need to tell the machine how much fuel we need to heat. To determine the total amount of fuel to heat, we just need to add up the fuel quantities from each hot air balloon.

Unfortunately, all fuel quantities are expressed in SNAFU format. This is our input data. E.g.

SNAFU is a variant of *base-5*. But instead of using digit values `0`

through `4`

, it instead uses these digits:

**What SNAFU number do you supply to Bob’s console?**

We need to determine the sum of all the SNAFU numbers in our input. But this sum must be expressed in SNAFU!

Here’s my strategy:

- Add SNAFU numbers column by column, from right to left, just like we would with any standard base numbering system.
- For addition of digits in any column:
- Convert to decimal
- Add up
- Determine any
*carry*values that need to be carried over to the left adjacent column. (Compare adding units in decimal addition: if the units add up to over 10, we need to carry-over the additional tens, when we subsequently add when summing the tens column.) - We need to carry-over, whenever the current column adds up to
`<-2`

, or`>2`

:- If the current column sum is
`>2`

: add one carry-over unit and subtract 5 in the current column. - If the current column sum is
`<-2`

: subtract one carry-over unit and add 5 in the current column.

- If the current column sum is
- Finally, convert the current column value back to SNAFU and store it.

- Now move on to the column on the left.
- Continue until there are no more columns.
